Air conditioning systems are complicated–and that means a lot of different things can go wrong. Here are some of the most common electrical culprits.
- Is your system’s motor shutting down suddenly? Does it trip its circuit breaker on a regular basis? These symptoms are caused by electrical problems like loose wiring or faulty relays.
- Is your system’s motor shutting off early? Struggling to turn on? This is most likely a problem with failed electrical capacitors. Start capacitors send voltage to your system’s motor to start it; run capacitors send voltage to the motors to keep them running. Of all the parts of your system, the capacitors are the most vulnerable to heat and may struggle to hold a charge in hot weather.
- Does your system take a long time to start up? Struggle to provide cool air? Freeze over because the fan isn’t getting enough air to flow over the coils? This might indicate a problem with improper voltage–either insufficient power or too much.
- Is your system’s cool cycle turning off before it’s complete (short cycling)? Is your system not turning on at all? Your thermostat or its wiring may be at fault, especially if the wiring is in poor condition or damaged.
