What size of system should I have?

Bigger is not always better. If it’s oversized or undersized it will consume too much energy, run inefficiently, and cause comfort issues. Your air conditioner really does need to be sized appropriately for your home. To do this, your contractor should perform a Manual J cooling load calculation.

What do SEER ratings mean?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. All air conditioners must be at least 13 SEER. Ratings go up to 23. The higher the rating, the greater the system’s efficiency. Systems on the higher end of the efficiency spectrum can be more difficult to keep calibrated.

Does anything else need to be done to accommodate the new system?

The air conditioner is only one piece of the complete cooling system. Other pieces include the air handler, thermostat, and your duct work. Duct work that leaks air can cut an air conditioner’s by up to 30%. Older duct systems may need to be repaired or replaced to adequately support the new air conditioner.

How long is the warranty term? What does it include?

Manufacturer warranties usually cover parts for a specific period of time. They also typically stipulate that you have the system serviced regularly. Be sure to understand the length and terms of the warranty.

HVAC contractors usually offer a warranty for their labor. Make sure you know what is covered and the term of the warranty.
