The U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to 78 degrees in the summer. That can be a tall order in the Houston heat. But each degree above 72 can save you up to 3% on your cooling costs. That’s 18% in savings at 78 degrees.
To make the transition to a higher thermostat setting easier, try increasing the temperature just a degree or two at a time. Also, use a ceiling fan in whatever room you are in. Its wind chill effect can make it seem 4 degrees cooler. For best effect, ensure the blades are spinning counterclockwise (looking up at the fan), select fans with the longest blades for the room, and use the lowest speed that provides relief.
You can also adjust the thermostat to a temperature 7 to 10 degrees higher when you’re away, then reduce it when you return. With a smart thermostat, you can adjust the thermostat via your phone so you arrive home to a cool home. A programmable thermostat can make this even easier. Raising your thermostat when you’re gone can save up to 10% on your energy costs.
You can also set the temperature lower for a few hours at bedtime, to fall asleep comfortably. Then you can increase it for the rest of the night.
