When your HVAC system is having problems, below are some troubleshooting tips you can try before calling in the professionals.
#1 Before you assume your HVAC system is malfunctioning, make sure your thermostat is set correctly. For instance, it’s easy to forget to switch it from “heat” to “cool” when the season changes. This can also happen if you changed it to “heat” during an unusual cold wave in moderate spring temperatures.
#2 Change your thermostat’s batteries if they haven’t been replaced lately. If the thermostat has dead or low functioning batteries, it can’t communicate with the air conditioning unit.
#3 Replace your air filters, especially if you can’t remember the last time you changed them. A dirty filter decreases proper air flow, so your unit either won’t work well or it may even shut down completely. Modern air conditioners are especially sensitive to dirty filters.
#4 Check your returns and air vents. If objects are obstructing your returns, or if your vents are clogged, air won’t be able to flow properly.
#5 See if the circuit breaker for your HVAC system has been tripped. If it has, you’ll need to reset it. If it continues to trip, you definitely need an HVAC professional to evaluate the situation.
