5 More Signs Your Furnace Needs Repairs
1) Your furnace starts and stops without running a full cycle (short cycling). This can be caused by a dirty flame sensor, dirty burners, a malfunctioning igniter, a furnace that’s too large for your home (improper sizing).
2) Your furnace runs longer than it typically has in the past. This can be caused by a dirty heat exchanger, cracked or malfunctioning heat exchanger, or a furnace that’s too small for your home.
3) Your furnace makes strange noises or rattles as it starts. This could indicate that your blower motor’s bearings need to be lubricated.
4) You smell a bad odor when your furnace runs. Starting a furnace for the first time in the season often results in a bad odor or a burnt smell. But if the smell continues after that, it could be a dirty heat exchanger or a dirty or an overheated blower motor.
5) Your HVAC system is leaking water. This could indicate your high-efficiency furnace has a damaged secondary heat exchanger. If the high-efficiency furnace is too big, the unit will short cycle, trapping water vapor in the secondary heat exchanger. This results in corrosion and leaks. Water can damage your system’s circuit board and components, so you should call for repair service as soon as possible.
