5 Signs Your Furnace Needs To Be Repaired
1) If a furnace smells like rotten eggs (gas). Do not use electrical switches, telephones, cell phones, or anything that can cause a spark. Do not start your vehicle. Leave your home immediately. Once you are safe, call your gas company or 911.
2) Changes in airflow. One vent might have weaker airflow than in the past. A room might be colder, warmer, or more humid than in the past. Causes can include dirty filters, air duct dampers, a clogged blower fan, and leaky ductwork.
3) If your pilot light isn’t blue. The pilot light is blue when the furnace is functioning properly. Ventilation problems will often result in a yellow pilot light. Air and carbon monoxide gas problems can result in other colors.
4) Higher utility bills. Inefficient furnaces use more energy, resulting in higher utility bills. It may simply need a tune-up or there may be a more significant problem.
5) If your furnace stops working. It may stop if the filter is clogged, and in some cases changing the filter may be enough to get it working again. But if dirt has gotten onto the heat exchanger, or something more serious is wrong, it will need professional attention.
