No one wants to find their pilot light out on a cold winter night in Houston. However, while it is annoying, an unlit pilot light is not always an emergency. Follow these simple steps to get your furnace warming your home in no time.
First, look for your furnace label.
Depending on the age of your furnace, installer, and manufacturer, there may be a label on your furnace with clear instructions on how to relight the pilot. If the sticker is clear enough that you can read the instructions, then go ahead and follow them. If not, then don’t worry, keep reading, and we will walk you through it.
Second, turn off your furnace.
Before you attempt to light the pilot, you need to ensure that your furnace is turned off. The furnace switch should be labeled “on/off” and is often found near the bottom of the system. Turn the switch off and wait five or more minutes before moving on. It is essential to wait five minutes or more. Do not skip this step.
Third, find the pilot knob.
After the appropriate time has passed, turn the knob over to “pilot” and hold the reset button. Grab a long lighter (do not use a match), and slowly move the flame towards the pilot valve. You should see the pilot light jump to life. After it does, release the reset button.
