As we head into spring and then summer, it’s a good idea to start thinking about maintenance and troubleshooting if there’s a problem with your AC. The most common problem is often not blowing cold air, and there are several reasons why this could be happening.
The first thing to check is your air filters. When was the last time you cleaned or replaced them? Often, if the air filter becomes dirty and clogged, the AC will struggle to work properly. Try replacing your air filter with a new, clean filter and see if the problem persists.
If your filter doesn’t seem to be the issue, next check your thermostat settings. It can be as simple as an incorrect setting. If your unit’s fan is set to ON rather than AUTO, the AC fan will run even when the cooling is not on, and it will blow warm air when the system isn’t actively cooling. While this may be helpful in moving air throughout your house, it does cost electricity to run, and you may want to set this to the AUTO selection so that it only runs when your AC is cooling.
Other possible issues include an electrical issue or a refrigerant leak. An electrical issue may be addressed if the unit is not receiving power because of a tripped breaker or GFI. However, if neither of these seems to be the case, or you suspect a refrigerant leak, it’s best to call a licensed technician to come and troubleshoot your AC. At Prestige Heating & Air Conditioning, our technicians are ready to help whenever your system needs help.
